This dress belonged to Stella Cane Bacher, an advertising executive for the Bellevue Square Shopping Center. She was born in Pittsburg, Pa. and moved to Bellevue in 1957. In addition to being promotion director of Bellevue Square and previously marketing director for Southcenter Mall, she was a member of the Seattle chapter of Fashion Group International. The dress was designed by avant-garde designer Rudi Gernreich. Gernreich left Austria in 1938 as a teenager, fleeing with his mother as Jewish refugees to the United States. He gained experience as a swimwear and knitwear designer and became infamous in 1964 for creating the “monokini,” a topless bathing suit for women. This dress is not quite as scandalous but still quite daring. It has no internal structure, yet the design would make most bras or girdles immediately visible. Going braless would likely be the only option. The dress was from a late-1960s line Gernreich created for Harmon Knitwear.
